Faithful stewardship

I recently purchased a starter home, which has prompted me to stop my 401k contributions so that I might build an emergency fund. I base this decision on the trajectory of our nation (it likely not being what it is now in 30 years anyway). My pastor, some family and most friends think this is unwise. Is this poor stewardship and does it jeopardize the future needs of my family? I would rather have the cash in my hand now, and live within our means, than trust in an uncertain event - drawing retirement - that may not be in God’s Will for me or our generation.
