To What Extent Can a Woman Be a Deaconess Today?

To what extent can a woman be a deaconess today? What is the purpose of one today? To me it seems as a way to subvert authority and slowly get women to be pastors and have authority. I remember Woe (possibly) saying that deaconesses in the early church would help only women in the community, and not be or try to be a pastor in all but name.
