Miscegenation and being American
Reasoning:
There are many “Americans” whose ancestors were here for generations before them, but wither their mother or father married with another race to conceive them. How far must the racial divide be in order for the child to be considered foreign? For example, my family, other than my paternal grandfather all immigrated to the United States from Germany in the early 1800s. My grandfather was a white Puerto Rican who immigrated to the US in the 1950s in order to join the military. I grew up and live on the same street my ancestors immigrated to and founded a church in the 1800s, and continue to farm the land they farmed. I feel a deep connection to this soil and would consider myself to be an American, but I also understand that due to my parents miscegenation, that could come into question for some. What are your thoughts on whether people like me are truly American or not?
